New Outdoor Lighting Requirements in Fairfax County

Effective June 17, 2003, Fairfax County will require a photometric plan for certain commercial uses and a sports illumination plan for certain outdoor recreation/sports facility uses.

Zoning Ordinance Amendment ZO-03-355 (Adobe PDF, 563KB), adopted June 16, 2003 by the Board of Supervisors, amends the glare standards found in Article 14 of the Zoning Ordinance.  The amendment adds a new requirement for the submission of a photometric plan and a sports illumination plan.  Additionally, the amendment provides new or revised lighting level requirements as well as additional requirements and information regarding light fixtures.

This amendment allows the County to evaluate the potential for light pollution caused by land uses which require significant illumination.  There are no specific requirements listed by the new plans, so there may be some confusion during initial implementation of the new requirements, which may delay plan approval.
