VDOT Changes to Curb Cut Ramps
The Virginia Department of
Transportation (VDOT) has revised the standards for installing curb cut
ramps (CG-12) along publicly maintained roadways. The type of ramp (CG-12A,
B or C) must be specified for each location. There must be landing areas at
the top of the ramps. Also, a two foot wide truncated dome detectable
warning surface must be installed adjacent to the street instead of exposed
aggregate. This warning surface must be painted yellow or an acceptable
contrasting color. The new ramp details are to used for plans submitted
after June 1, 2003 and will be encouraged for roads currently requesting
state maintenance acceptance.
The revised curb cut ramp
information is contained in VDOT’s Instructional and Informational
Memorandum (IIM) LD-55.7 that can be accessed via the Internet at
http://www.extranet.vdot.state.va.us/locdes/electronic pubs/iim/IIM55.pdf
(PDF file; requires Adobe Reader, available here). Sheets 12 to 14 of the
IIM publication denote the calculations and charts for determining the
“Minimum Ramp Lengths Based on Curb Slopes”. The updated Road and Bridge
Standard detail for the VDOT CG-12A can be found on page 15 of following
VDOT Internet PDF file:

(The CG-12B detail is on page 16 of the same document and the CG-12C is on
page 17.)
An
additional change, a modified CG-12C (single ramp) can be used at a corner,
diagonal to street intersections. This type of ramp provides a CG-2 curb at
the back of walk, creating a wall in order to provide a 48” x 48” relatively
flat area for maneuvering. This eliminates the need for additional
right-of-way dedication at the intersection where a sidewalk would be
required to pass behind the ramp. (The modified CG-12C detail is located in
the Fairfax Co. DPWES Letter to Industry 03-13, located in the following PDF
file:
