Proposed Amendments Affect Fairfax County Drainfields
Proposed Amendments Affect Fairfax County Drainfields
The Fairfax County
Health Department is currently proposing amendments to Chapter 68 of the
County
Code, which deals
with individual sewage disposal facilities (drainfields). These draft
amendments propose changes to the evaluation, design and construction of
these facilities. Some of these changes include substantial additional
reserve area, increased design flows for dwellings in excess of 3300 square
feet, maximum depths of fields and maximum cover over septic tanks. There
are also changes proposed requiring modifications to existing drainfields
when an existing dwelling is being expanded. In a nutshell, these proposed
changes will require additional lot area to be encumbered to provide a
larger drainfield and increased reserve area. Translated another way,
larger drainfields or smaller units.
Although the comment
period for the informal phase of this process ended March 1, 2003, there is
still an opportunity to comment on the proposed amendments during the
upcoming months. Currently, it is anticipated that there will be a public
hearing scheduled in May 2003 to consider adoption of the proposed
amendments.
Anyone with lots
utilizing drainfields, whether it is new construction or an expansion,
should review the proposed amendments for applicability to their specific
project.
