BC Consultants, a leading Northern Virginia land-development design firm, seeks a full-time Project Manager - Engineering to join our team in Fairfax, VA.


About You

You are a highly experienced civil engineer with at least six years of broad experience in land development design. You have been the lead designer on a variety of projects, and have trained and overseen the work of junior engineers.  You are able to lead the design team, and be the primary contact between the firm and clients for specific projects.  You also are ready to accept responsibility for both technical and financial performance for projects.

You are technically proficient in all areas of site design, and experienced in all project phases from feasibility through construction administration.  You will work on a variety of project types, including residential, commercial and governmental. You are able to handle multiple projects at various stages of design, review and construction.  You will assign, review and approve the work of junior engineers on your team, and coordinate with other departments. 

You will be part of a team of highly experienced senior professionals within the firm who will challenge you to grow as a land development professional. You will participate in marketing, business development and proposal preparation.  You will be responsible for add-services, billing and collections for your projects.

You should be competent using AutoCAD and Microsoft Office. You should be licensed as a Professional Engineer.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

The Engineering Project Manager will work on all phases of site development including grading design, roadway design, and storm water management systems design.

  1. Responsible for complete project documents and project design review

  2. Serve as main contact and liaison with client on project progress

  3. Carry out supervisory responsibilities for direct reports, including: interviewing, hiring, coaching; planning, assigning and directing work; managing performance to include providing feedback, recognition and discipline as appropriate; addressing complaints and resolving problems

  4. Train new project engineers and technical staff

  5. Provide oversight to Professional and Technical Staff on complete project documents and project design review

  6. Process projects through municipalities

  7. Develop and manage the budget for the project as well as monitor billing and collections

  8. Coordinate with other departments for project related items

  9. Market current clients for new projects

  10. Sign plans as needed

  11. Perform other duties as assigned

Supervision Received and Exercised

  • Reports directly to the Engineering Section Manager; in the absence of the Engineering Section Manager, reports to the Principal, Engineering

  • Supervises team of Staff Engineers, Project Engineers, Sr. Project Engineers and CAD Technicians

Internal and External Contacts

The Project Manager regularly interfaces with employees, vendors, governmental review agencies and clients.

Job Requirements

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university

  • Fundamentals of Engineering (EIT), Professional Engineer (PE) preferred

  • A minimum of six years direct experience as a civil engineer, performing site design using the latest version of AutoCAD and Civil 3D

  • Northern Virginia market experience preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Thorough knowledge of CAD, design software, Microsoft Office

  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, meet deadlines and work as part of interactive team

  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills

  • Ability to obtain Professional Engineer license (PE) if not already obtained
