BC Consultants, a leading Northern Virginia land-development design firm, seeks a full-time Senior Project Engineer to join our team in Fairfax, VA.


About You

You are a civil engineering graduate with four to six years of experience in land development design. You understand all of the elements that go into a plan, and are ready to serve as the lead designer for a project. You are competent with all areas of design, including grading, storm drainage, stormwater management, sanitary sewers, water mains, erosion and sediment control and the local jurisdiction requirements.

You will work on a variety of different project types, including residential, commercial and governmental. You will meet with clients and reviewers, and interact with the other disciplines in the office daily. You will assist with the instruction of junior staff and review their work. You will work closely with your Project Manager to monitor project performance and quality control.

You are highly capable using AutoCAD and Microsoft Office. You should have your Fundamentals of Engineering exam (EIT), and be working towards your Professional Engineer license (PE).

You are able to write effectively, and have excellent interpersonal skills. You are detail-oriented, creative, self-starting, and relate well to all levels. You have a positive attitude, a strong work ethic and a good sense of humor!

Job Duties and Responsibilities

The Senior Project Engineer will perform design work for all phases of projects for all plan elements including: storm drainage systems, sanitary sewer systems, storm water management and BMP facilities, street layout, grading, house sitings, bond estimates/reductions.

  1. Perform complex design work for all phases of projects

  2. Train engineers on plan preparation

  3. Review calculations for projects

  4. Participate in and may lead client and coordination review meetings

  5. Provide sketches and layout information to planning staff

  6. Research and develop standards for new design tools

  7. Train new engineers and serve as mentor to engineering staff

  8. Provide oversight to CAD technicians

  9. Process projects through municipalities

  10. Work within budgets and schedules and address discrepancies; assist Project Manager with developing budgets

  11. Set up and provide overall design outline for overall project

  12. Coordinate with other departments on project related items

  13. Perform other duties as assigned

Supervision Received and Exercised

  • Reports directly to the Project Manager; in the absence of the Project Manager, reports to the Senior Project Manager

  • No direct supervisory responsibility; may serve as lead for new project engineers

Internal and External Contacts

The Senior Project Engineer regularly interfaces with employees, vendors, review agencies and clients.

Job Requirements

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university

  • Fundamentals of Engineering (EIT) preferred

  • 4 to 6 years direct experience as a civil engineer, performing site design using the latest version of AutoCAD and Civil 3D

  • Northern Virginia market experience preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong knowledge of AutoCAD, design software, Microsoft Office

  • Thorough knowledge of state and local codes and ordinances

  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, meet deadlines and work as part of interactive team

  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills

  • Ability to obtain P.E. license
